Daily Reads:
Techdirt — Excellent commentary on the future of
our technological freedoms. Free is a business model.
Ars Technica — Ars is my primary source for
computer, internet, technology, and related news.
Space.com — The space-news standby.
New Scientist —
A good source for new advances in science.
Science Daily — Another, quality science news
source to make sure I don't miss anything.
Replacing Cable:
I refuse to pay for cable/satellite/etc. especially since there are internet alternatives:
Hulu — NBC-owned Hulu has many properties but I watch Battlestar Galactica, The Office, Daily Show, and Colbert Report.
Miro — Miro is an open-source RSS video viewer with a regular updates and a large installed base. I subscribe to news sources (CNN, NBC), skiing shows (Freeskier, Snowcast, Snowfix), TED talks, and tech news (Webb Alert, GeekBrief, Hak5, dl.tv, MAKE), and SpaceVidcast.
Background:
I'm a third-year engineering student at the University of Wisconsin - Madison majoring in Engineering Mechanics and Astronautics with a minor in Computer Science (see professional for further details). I grew up in Wausau, Wisconsin (here's a map for all who think that Madison is 'up north') and graduated from Newman High School.
I try to keep active and enjoy running, downhill skiing, biking, soccer, and camping. My hobbies match my profession in that I enjoy electronics and mechnical projects, which will be detailed in projects. I envision the future with the help of Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Farscape, Babylon 5, and many other space-based sci-fi stories.
