Project Overview

A patient (6-year-old with Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is unable to operate her portable suction device independently. Specifically, she has insufficient strength to activate the rocker switch. The patient’s mother and doctor feel favor a switch that requires less force, possibly a push button switch. This problem is not unique to the patient since many individuals requiring a portable suction device have compromised upper extremity strength. Design of an new, alternative switch could aid this population by decreasing their dependence on others.
