Project Overview

A device is needed to aid in the treatment or dysphagia (swallowing disorders). This device will be set up and used by patients in their homes, and will provide useful feedback and data during therapeutic exercise of the oral-pharyngial musculature.

Project Status

The project has reached the completion of the third semester of work. A second functional prototyple was built to include custom electronics and the improved mouthpiece. Please read the final report for full details.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 January 23 Research smaller electronics, sensor technologies, develop list sites for K-12 presentation
2 January 30 Look into PCB printers, find out about production microcontrollers, look for alternate mouthpiece materials
3 February 6 Schedule K-12 presentation, contact Zilog, try to get sensor samples
4 February 13 Start invention disclosure, evaluate alternate mouthpiece materials, continue research on sensors and electronics
5 February 20 Continue development of mouthpiece, sensor research, clean up code
6 February 27 Meeting with Client, K-12 presentation, ordered microcontroller and supporting components, ordered peizo sensor samples
7 March 5 Assembled charge pump and microcontroller on breadboard, evaluated sensor, midsemester presentation
8 March 12 (spring break)
9 March 19 Decided to continue to use FSR as sensor
10 March 26 Planned testing of device, problems with electronics on breadboard
11 April 2 Breadboard electronics partially operational
12 April 9 Burnt out microcontrollers, tested mouthpiece forming
13 April 16 Decided on larger microcontroller, developed sensor covering, ordered PCB
14 April 23 Assembly of final electronics, testing and calibration
15 April 30 Completion of Final Report
