Project Overview

4-D tomotherapy treatment (Tomotherapy) outcomes for lung cancer depend on the stability and repeatability of a patient’s breathing pattern. A portable patient training system is desired to allow more practice for the patients. The portable device will measure a patient’s breathing pattern; the portable pocket PC displays the guiding cycles and provides feedback on the patient’s current breathing curve. Project Status

Currently we have a working prototype using a linear potentiometer attached to a chest strap. This measures the distance around the chest and therefor the breathing cycle. The signal is then sent to a laptop computer to process the information. We have a basic program using LabView which can capture a guiding cycle and display that guiding cycle with the realtime breathing cycle.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 January 23 Assigned team roles and scheduled meeting with client
2 January 30 Worked on PDS and defined problem statement
3 February 6 Determine hardware for measuring breathing cycle
4 February 13 Interfacing LabView w/ Analoge to digital converter
5 February 20 Order position transducer and arrange meating w/ local National Instruments engineer and learn about NI DAQ cards for A/D conversion
6 February 27 Split up and begin working on midterm paper and PowerPoint presentations
7 March 5 Finalized and practiced PowerPoint presentation; worked on midterm paper
8 March 12 Compiled midterm paper and edited it; began working w/ position transducer for measuring respiration
9 March 19 Worked on our hardware. We need to get a strap and project box to build our prototype.
10 March 26 Continued working on and designing the hardware section of our prototype.
11 April 2 Purchased project box, strap and battery for our devive and began putting them together.
12 April 9 Installed potentiometer and battery into project box. We also began programing with LabView.
13 April 16 Looked into PDA and PCMCIA card cradles. Worked on prototype and LabView.
14 April 23 Added elastic and an on/off switch to our prototype and made further adjustments. Interfaced Prototype with the Laptop using LabView and DAQ card.
15 April 30 Gave final presentation and finished final paper. Further Tweaked our prototype.
