4-D tomotherapy treatment (Tomotherapy) outcomes for lung cancer depend on the stability and repeatability of a patient’s breathing pattern. A portable patient training system is desired to allow more practice for the patients. The portable device will measure a patient’s breathing pattern; the portable pocket PC displays the guiding cycles and provides feedback on the patient’s current breathing curve.
Currently we have a working prototype using a linear potentiometer attached to a chest strap. This measures the distance around the chest and therefor the breathing cycle. The signal is then sent to a laptop computer to process the information. We have a basic program using LabView which can capture a guiding cycle and display that guiding cycle with the realtime breathing cycle.
