Project Overview

The objective of this project is to design a suction machine that can be manufactured from locally available materials with the ability to run off batteries, electrical power (when available) or human power. This device should provide the broadest range of possible applications while still remaining under the $100 price limit.

Project Status

Improvements to last semester’s design (including suction control, improved valves, a rigid member connecting the motor and diaphragm, and an overall size reduction) have been developed and tested. A working prototype has been built.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 September 7 Met with client, formulated improvements on last semester’s design
2 September 14 Researched improvements, contacted EWH about funding
3 September 21 Began designing improvements
4 September 28 Designed improvements, applied for EWH funding, acquired materials to build preliminary prototype
5 October 5 Designed improvements, began testing improvement designs, worked on mid-semester presentation
6 October 12 Worked on mid-semester presentation
7 October 19 Delivered mid-semester presentation, wrote and delivered mid-semester report
8 October 26 Met with Dr. Fronczak, revised PDS, tested plastic diaphragm design, contacted new client
9 November 2 Designed and tested bellows design, met with new client.
10 November 9 Developed piston design, began building prototype to test the other improvements.
11 November 16 Refined piston design, continued building prototype to test other improvements
12 November 23 Continued building and testing prototype
13 November 30 Finished building and optomizing prototype, developed and tested improved piston design, developed and delivered poster presentation
14 December 7 Wrote instructions for EWH and the final report
15 December 14 Final Meetings
