The reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus is one of the most common GI ailments. One consequence of such reflux is the formation of scar tissue which forms abnormally stiff regions of esophageal tissue, sometime leading to bostructive swallowing disorders. There are very few methods for either diagnosing or treating this disorder. There are two measurements which would be useful from a clinical point of view; a\) Device to measure the size of the structure - i.e., the percent reduction in radius of the stricture. b\) A device to measure the compliance of the tissue; the stress-strain behavior.
Currently the design team is brainstorming ideas to improve last semester’s project and to create a device that could be used as a testing device, i.e. a device which replicates the esophagus
