Develop a device to measure head movements in a mock MRI scanner environment. Head motion can cause data collected during a functional MRI examination to be unusable. Currently, a mock MRI scanner is used to acclimate subjects to the MRI environment and train them to remain as still as possible. A way is needed to monitor the actual amount of motion and provide feedback to the subjects if the motion is significant enough to be problematic. The device should be comfortable, compatible with the mock imaging hardware environment, non-invasive and suitable for use on children and vulnerable populations.
A functional "proof of concept" prototype has been built and tested. The device uses an optical sensor mounted between the visual stimuli goggles, lightly touching the patients forehead. The output is used by a simple program that indicates whether movements are large enough to cause error. This group has now completed work for this semester, this project will not be further developed until another group starts in some future semester. Future work may include improving the software and reliability, and adapting the sensor to work without making contact. A full report of what has been accomplished us below in the reports and presentations section.
