Project Overview

Our goal is to design a portable teaching tool to demonstrate the strength of polyurethane and latex barriers, using weights and a scale. This model is meant to be light enough to carry in a suitcase, to be brought around to other classrooms statewide and eventually nationwide.

Project Status

With the poster presentation and prototype complete, our team will focus our efforts on the group final report and the individual design notebooks. (5/3/09)

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 January 23 Assigned roles, contacted client, researched some background information on some aspects of the device
2 January 30 Finished PDS (temp), did more in-depth testing of condom strength, determined budget, reidentified project goals and expectations
3 February 6 Brainstormed design ideas, contacted originator of product idea, did more extensive barrier testing. Revised PDS.
4 February 13 Had a second meeting with client and representatives of her class; gained more headway into what our final design will look like, identified places to buy parts for device.
5 February 20 Moved on with ordering some key parts including poles and the scale, on Friday we starting preparing for the midsemester presentation.
6 February 27 Entire team assembled and practiced the midsemester presentation.
7 March 6 Most of the focus this week has been on the midsemester paper, finalizing notebooks, and other such tasks before Wednesday, March 11.
8 March 13 Over spring break, each member researched necessary aspects of design so we could get a jump on the project upon returning to school.
9 March 20 Researched possibilities for the octopus clamp, tracked down a lead source, and started applying for permits for the shop.
10 March 27 Recieved lead, worked to recieve shop permits. The next two weeks will see vigorous testing of the barrier and contstruction of the device.
11 April 3 Construction of Male Barrier Model
12 April 10 Construction of Male Barrier Model
13 April 17 Testing of MBM
14 April 24 Finalized design, finished poster for the presentation
15 May 1 Completion of Paper and Design Notebooks, Client and Peer Evaluations.
