Project Overview

When firefighters enter a smoke-filled building, the command center wants to know if they are breathing so they can decide to send in a rescue team. We need to measure ventilation from a miniature device on an expandable chest strap and wirelessly transmit to the command center outside.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 January 25 Background research- current systems on market, inductance plethysmography, data transmitters
2 February 1 Narrow focus of research to materials, specifically fabrics and wires that would be used in any design
3 February 8 Buy materials like fabric and wires and work on designs
4 February 15 Visit sleep apnea lab, finalize design/ design matrix, prepare powerpoint for presentation
5 February 22 Draw designs in CAD and PSPICE, finalize designs and design matrix, choose design, finish midsemester presentation
6 February 29 Midsemester report, finish report, finalize list of materials to order, and possibly order materials
7 March 7 Research circuit components, enjoy spring break
8 March 14 Spring Break
9 March 21 Build chest strap, talk to Burke O’Neal and order circuit components, begin constructing circuit
10 March 28 Attach Velcro to chest strap, test oscillator circuit, order frequency to voltage converter
11 April 4 Debug circuits, test oscillator, decide which circuit we plan on using, complete chest strap
12 April 11 Talk with Justin about the possibility of using his circuit design, order a 2N-2222 BJT which is in some oscillator schematics
13 April 18 Order frequency to voltage chip, complete poster and rehearse presentation
14 April 25 Continue trying to obtain voltage signal from frequency output of Colpitts oscillator in a usable waveform, present poster
15 May 2 Completed poster presentation, final report, and working prototype
