Biomedical Engineering Design: 400 and 402
Team Project 2004-2005
Accessible Ergometer
This design project is part of the RERC on AMI National Student Design Competition-Universal Design 2004-2005. The aim of this project is to build a creative cycle ergometer (exercise bike) that is usable by individuals with a diversity of disabilities including: Deafness, Blindness, Low Vision, Parkinson’s Disease, Post-Stroke, Heart Failure, and Diabetes. Many considerations were made to accommodate the various complications presented by the various abilities of people with these conditions as well as to make the design of the ergometer universal. A prototype has been constructed and tested with human subjects, and the information obtained through this testing has been used to make necessary improvements to the design. The considerations and steps taken in the design process of the ergometer are detailed in this website.
