Project Overview

Our client needs a device that will rotate and flex/hyperextend the neck in both CT and MRI scanners. Movements must be reproducible and isocentric about the spinal column.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 September 9 E-mailed our client to set up an initial meeting.
2 September 16 Researched background information. Set up meeting with client.
3 September 23 Met with client. Observed CT and MRI machines. Split up into groups of two. Brainstormed possible design options.
4 September 30 Finalized possible designs. Began working on midsemester paper and presentation.
5 October 7 Completed possible design ideas and chose one to pursue further. Finished midsemester paper and presentation. Gave midsemester presentation.
6 October 14 Set up meeting with client to discuss design ideas. Returned to one large group and set up timeline for remainder of semester.
7 October 21 Met with our client and discussed final design to pursue. The group came to a consensus on a final design
8 October 28 Split into groups of two and began researching specific areas of design.
9 November 4 Contacted various professors recommended by Prof. Radwin to assist in structural analysis of our design. Continued small group research.
10 November 11 Met in full group to discuss overall progress and fill in gaps of design research. Waiting for reply from multiple professors for their assistance
11 November 18 Met with Prof. Fronczak concerning structure and joint design. Began forming list of parts to order.
12 November 25 Had meeting with Prof. Osswald to discuss materials of our design. Ordered parts for the design prototype.
13 December 2 Broke up final paper/presentation for individuals to work on over Thanksgiving break. Discussed finite element analysis process with Prof. Manner.
14 December 9 Built prototype of our design. Compiled final paper and began editing. Finished final presentation and presented this to advisors.
15 December 16 Finished editing final paper with PDS. Completed peer reviews. Turned in paper and design notebooks. Met with client to present final design.
