The current medical procedure of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) is unable many times to extract sufficient cell samples for detection of abnormal cells. Our goal is to improve both the technique and the extraction device to maintain the use of a 20 guage or smaller needle while extracting sufficient cells for accurate cytological diagnosis.
Testing on various tissues and using histological analysis to determine efficiency of our design compared to original technique. Initial testing has been done on posthumous cat tissues. Next, we plan to move onto testing using either freshly extracted tissue, or to actual living cancerous tissue in animal models.
Currently testing prototype using posthumous cat tissues (mammary, fat, etc.).
Check tissue slides histologically to determine effectiveness of our design and technique.
Begin testing of freshly extracted or in vivo tissues from animal models by early February 2003.
Check tissue slides again to further verify effectiveness of our design and technique, around February/March 2003.
