Progress Report 14

(Dec. 4- Dec 10, 2002)

Tissue Sample Preparation Device for Biochemical Analysis

Team Members:
Sara Alford (Team Leader)
Christine Koranda (Communications Rep.)
Carla Maas (BWIG)
Ryan Roth (BSAC)

Client:
Jeff Ross and Charles Tessier
University of Wisconsin - Medical School
Department of Oncology

Advisor: Paul Thompson

Date: December 4 - 10, 2002

Problem Statement: To design a device that completes the preparation process done manually to prep a tissue sample for biochemical analysis. The device should freeze the tissue (with liquid nitrogen), and grind it to a powder. Sample should be easily collected.

Restatement of Team and Individual Goals:
Carla:

1.) Search all sources in an all out attempt to find electrical control in minimal time: Wendt reference books, Radioshack, internet, and other resources
2.) Update regulator to Ironcad image to look more realistic and add solenoid, tubing, fittings, and lab air to the figure, upon completion send back to Christine
3.) Write up to valve section on how to read pneumatic "circuit" diagrams
4.) As soon as cylinder and solenoid comes in, assemble pneumatic parts

Christine:
1.) Find feasible alternative for grinding chamber
2.) Assist in building grinding chamber
3.) Finish sections of midsemester paper

Ryan
1.) Help Carla with assembling pneumatic system.
2.) Build frame for cylinder
3.) Write respective parts for the paper.

Sara
1.) Build insulation chamber
2.) Research if I need a specific sealant for dry ice for seams of the structure
3.) Paper parts and assemble the entire paper
4.) Assist Christine with sample chamber alternative building method.

Group:
1) Assign poster parts this Friday
2) Fill in gaps of the paper

Summary of Accomplishments:
Carla:

1.) Electrical Control: repeat cycle timer too expensive, took Paul's advice on finding a "Christmas flasher", purchased plug-in flasher, and simple push button switch at Menards. Purchased electrical plug at Radio Shack - this is not ideal...made more for broken plugs, not building one from bare wire.
2.) Updated regulator to Ironcad image, added solenoid, tubing, fittings. Added posts and base of Ryan's support system to image.
3.) Picked up all pneumatic parts and assembled
4.) Got working zipped file of powerpoint up
5.) Attempt to contact Fronczak via email to return cylinder and see if we could borrow some sort of adaptor to test our device on lab air

Christine:
1.) Found solution for grinding chamber after talking with Bill Hagquist in the ME shop
2.) Gave grinding chamber specifications to ME shop to build
3.) Wrote sections of midsemester paper: liquid nitrogen testing protocol and results, description of pressure calculations, ethical issues for project
4.) Ordered parts for the grinding chamber

Ryan:
1.) Bought frame materials
2.) Assembled frame with group on Sunday
3.) Wrote section of paper and sent to Sara

Sara:
1.) Received all parts of the paper and began to combine and revise paper.
2.) Assisted with building of the prototype at group meeting Sunday
3.) Wrote paper and poster sections
4.) Coordinated meetings with group

Team and Individual Goals for Next Week:
Carla:
1.) Visit Electrical Parts shop to see if they have more reliable parts to connect switch, solenoid, and electrical plug. Finish up solenoid wiring to look better and be electrically safe.
2.) Finish up Ironcad w/ appropriate scale and some dimensions
3.) Paper - why we chose pneumatic, and some of the future work
4.) Update budget w/ Ryan's base prices, Sara's chamber, Christine's machined sample chamber, and Carla's Menard's parts
5.) Presentation: component diagram, force diagrams, testing photo, excel testing graph, future work sections

Christine:
1.) Pick up completed sample chamber from the ME shop
2.) Find a way to attach grinding head to cylinder
3.) Write grinding chamber description and future concerns related to grinding head for the paper
4.) Take pictures of prototype
5.) Obtain ring stand and clamps for prototype display
6.) Help write and assemble poster parts
7.) Assist in finishing Ironcad drawing
8.) Gather information on patenting process

Ryan
1.) Finish building frame of prototype
2.) Write paper section on motor design and evaluation
3.) Write up designated poster sections

Sara:
1.) Finish building insulating chamber
2.) Put together everyone's parts of the paper
3.) Poster sections
4.) Buy supplies for poster by Thursday.

Group:
1.) Meeting Thursday night at 6:00 CAE to work on the final details of the poster.
2.) Friday is the Poster presentation.

Project Schedule:
Week 1: Group chose same project, client was contacted for a meeting.
Week 2: Goals for semester established, tasks divided, client meeting
Week 3: Developed experimental protocols, researched methods of force testing, met with faculty
Week 4: LN2 Testing, Meetings with other faculty for grinding mechanism and testing advice
Week 5: Force testing with force plate, pneumatic cylinder decisions, materials research
Week 6: Analyzed testing data, pneumatic cylinder and valve decisions, mid-semester presentation
Week 7: Mid-semester presentation, Continued work on choosing cylinder.
Week 8: Cylinder specifications, chamber pressure calculations
Week 9: Final cylinder specifications, budget, chamber and overall design
Week 10: Pressure calculations, Solenoid selection
Week 11: Ordering cylinder, dimensions for lower chambers
Week 12: Drawings of chamber, Putting together cylinder/solenoid/filter
Week 13: Cylinder components arrived, electrical control work, insulation bought.
Week 14: Prototype Building, Paper and Poster Preparation

Difficulties:
-- Missing a progress report update from one team member.
-- Not a lot of time, so we haven't been able to test the prototype like we had hoped.

Activities:

Carla: 5 hours -- IronCad, assembly of parts, website, emails, RadioShack-Walgreens-Target-Menards trip for electrical timer, team meetings
Christine: 6 hours--meeting with Bill Hagquist, setting up ME shop account, ordering supplies, meeting with group to help assemble prototype, brainstorming ways to attach grinding head to cylinder, writing sections for midsemester paper, Ironcad drawing consulting
Ryan: ? - frame supplies and building frame, paper, group meeting and prototype building meeting.
Sara: 6 hours -- putting together paper, insulating chamber building and planning, assembling prototype meeting, Monday group meeting, writing sections for paper and poster,
