Advisor: Paul Thompson

Date: Oct. 30 - Nov 5, 2002

Problem Statement: To design a device that completes the preparation process done manually to prep a tissue sample for biochemical analysis. The device should freeze the tissue (with liquid nitrogen), and grind it to a powder. Sample should be easily collected.

Restatement of Team Goals:
1. Complete pressure calculations, including the size of the venting hole for the sample chamber and the coolant chamber below.
2. Research metal parts that we could purchase and not have to machine for the prototype for the chamber.
3. Find prices and vendors for insulated buckets for underneath chamber.
4. Find yield strengths for the possible metals we would use -- aluminum, copper, and nickel.
5. Update the PDS Friday during class
6. Put together a proposed cost/budget for the entire project during Friday's class period.
7. Update website - add pneum links, image of cylinder we will purchase, fix email address, turn force and LN2 files into html pages not pdf files, zip ppt presentation, add credit to Prof Fronczak
8. Write up ordering number for desired pneumatic cylinder (include low temp option)
9.. Contact Bimba to see if we could get a discounted cylinder since they sometimes give 1 free cylinder to manufactures for testing
10. Research rod clevis attachment, find out if this will work out for attaching grinding head to end of cylinder rod
11. Start thinking about making a good component schematic of all pneumatic parts for final poster

Summary of Accomplishments:
1. Budget was put together in class on Friday. It still needs to be updated throughout this week.
2. PDS (Version 6) Updated and Attached
3. Pneumatic cylinder mounting types investigated.
4. Pressure calculations worked on and set up. Hope to have done by Friday but we need to convert to English units instead of metric which might take a while.
5. Parts for the chamber research - metal pestle and mortar as well as LN2 tubing
6. Design work on the chamber and coolant chamber below, connection of devices, and method for moving the cylinder up and down and lock in place.
7. Website was updated.

Team Goals for Next Week:
1. More concrete sketches and drawings of how all the components fit together. Specific design of a locking in place mechanism for the sample chamber. Also possibly incorporating a safety blow out valve.
2. Pressure calculations.
3. Work on the few details of the pneumatic cylinderr left such as the solenoid valve.
4. Complete the budget and show to Corrine for approval of funds.
5. Order materials.
6. Update website.
7. *** Everyone make sure to take the human subjects training by Thursday!

Project Schedule:
Week 1: Group chose same project, client was contacted for a meeting.
Week 2: Goals for semester established, tasks divided, client meeting
Week 3: Developed experimental protocols, researched methods of force testing, met with faculty
Week 4: LN2 Testing, Meetings with other faculty for grinding mechanism and testing advice
Week 5: Force testing with force plate, pneumatic cylinder decisions, materials research
Week 6: Analyzed testing data, pneumatic cylinder and valve decisions, mid-semester presentation
Week 7: Mid-semester presentation, Continued work on choosing cylinder.
Week 8: Cylinder specifications, chamber pressure calculations
Week 9: Final cylinder specifications, budget, chamber and overall design

Difficulties:
We were slightly confused about pressure calculations earlier this week, but now i think we are fine.
We are also still working on the overall connection of the device which has been more difficult than we thought to put together.

Activities:
Carla: 2 hours - website upkeep, working on the specifics of the cylinder, Monday meeting
Christine: 4 hours - pressure calculations, sketches with Sara, chamber research, Monday meeting.
Ryan: ? - cylinder and tubing specifics,
Sara: 2.5 hours - Monday meeting, progress report, preparation of budget, sketches with Christine.
