Design a device to complete manual tissue preparation process for biochemical analysis. The device should freeze the tissue with liquid nitrogen and grind it to a powder.
In our third and final semester on this project, we finalized our prototype. One team built a timing circuit for the solenoid valve while the other team designed the grinding chamber, cooling chamber and pulverizing head. The UW-Machine Shop machined our parts from AutoCAD drawings. We have mounted the grinding and cooling chamber, assembled the electronics and connected all pneumatic parts. Initial testing of all components with mouse liver, liquid nitrogen, and the dry-ice/ ethanol bath occurred in our client’s lab.
Our project earned both Honorable Mention and a K-12 Outreach Award at Engineering EXPO, April 10 - 12, 2003. Final presentations occurred May 2, 2003 in the atrium of the Engineering Centers Building.
