Project Overview

Our goal is to design a phantom for use in an MR imager to calibrate T2 relaxation value to water concentration in a gell over a range of 70 - 90%.

An old design and once a final product:

This is a picture of one of the semesters designs. It is a four tier stair structure that holds glass vials.

Our final design for the phantom consists of an acrylic container with tubes running through to hold glass vials. The glass vials can be filled with gadolinium and disk mimicking samples. This design allows variation in sample placement throughout the phantom and encompasses adequate loading for the MR scans. The following picture shows our current design:

The following picture shows an earlier model of our design.

Data from Gadolineum samples and curve to fit:

This is a graph of the curve formed from tested T2 values of Gd doped water samples.

Gelatin and Acrylamide samples were scanned in the MR machine (see image below). The data was analyzed and gelatin was selected as the gel for our design based on T2 values closer to the desired range.

The following scan was performed on 3/10/06.

This is the image obtained from scanning our samples in the MR machine.

This following table shows the results from the scan in the previous picture.

Project Timeline

Week Reporting Period Beginning Activities
1 January 20 We got into our groups and re-evaluated where we left off last semester. We discussed our progress and what needed to be done right away.
2 January 27 We have been having trouble getting ahold of Todd Kyle and our phantom progress is delayed. We have contacted our client to set up times to scan gel samples.
3 February 3 We created a design outline for the semester. One of the pressing tasks was to create "stock" gel samples so that making testing samples would be easier later in the semester.
4 February 10 We met with our client and discussed testing and samples. We set up scan times and talking about testing and analyzing cadaver lumber disks.
5 February 17 We established date and time to do outreach presentation, created powerpoint for midsemester, analyzed MR scan results, and refined our research goals.
6 February 24 We prepared additional gel samples, scanned these samples, and gave Outreach powerpoint presentation.
7 March 3 We analyzed scan data and met with Dr. Anderson to discuss obtaining cadaver disks and conducting research with them.
8 March 10 Spring Break Recess
9 March 17 We met with our client to talk about the scan results and the gel sample T2 value properties.
10 March 24 We analyzed additional scan data, researched glycoaminoglycan assay protocols, and obtained human cadaver spine disks.
11 March 31 We re-evaluated the purpose of our project for the rest of the semester, scanned gadolinium samples using our phantom, worked on our Outreach paper
12 April 7 We analyzed the results from the previous scans, tested additional gadolinium samples in the MR imager, and completed the Outreach paper.
13 April 14 We researched background and introduction information for our manuscript, began writing the manuscript, and verified the analysis of scan dada
14 April 21 We met with client to discuss the scan results obtained from gel samples, analyzed data by creating additional graphs, and continued working on the manuscript.
15 April 28 We finished writing the manuscript, performed additional scans on gelatin samples, finished the poster presentation, and rehearsed for the oral presentation.
