Project Title: Mouth Guard for Prevention of Bruxism
Team Members: Kathleen Agard, Jackie Gerhart, Matt Harris, Carla Maas, Darcee Nelson, Julie Sauer, Tracy Stefonek
Subgroup: Jackie Gerhart and Darcee Nelson
Client: Michael Conforti
Advisor: John G. Webster
Date: 10/3/01 - 10/9/01

Problem Statement: The goal of this project is to design a mouth guard that will detect the teeth grinding of a patient during sleep. The device should provide a stimulus to the patient causing he/she to unclench his/her teeth.

Restatement of Team Goals:

1. Search for possible pressure sensors.
2. Choose one that could be used in our design.
3. Discuss overall project design - sketches.
4. Meet with Chiropractor, if possible.
5. Work on preliminary report.

Summary of Accomplishments:

1. Decided final design idea.
2. Wrote rough draft of preliminary report
3. Made changes to PDS to correspond to the final design chosen.

Statement of Team Goals:

1. Complete midsemester power point presentation.
2. Complete circuit diagrams and mouthguard sketches for preliminary report/power point presentation.
3. Choose specific switch to be used in final design.
4. Complete final draft of preliminary report.

Project Schedule:

10/10 - 10/18 Finalize project solution, prepare mid-semester presentation and paper
10/19 Mid-semester presentations
10/19 - 10/26 Decide on final design
10/27 - 11/29 Work on final design
11/30 - 12/13 Final presentation and paper
12/14 Final presentations
12/17 - 12/23 Final meeting with advisor

Difficulties:

We aren't sure what type of switch to use at this time. It has to be closed only when they are bruxing and not when they are simply closing the jaw.

Activities:

Jackie:

Team meeting, 2 hours; looked at current patents with Darcee, 2 hours; wrote preliminary design report, 7 hours; e-mails and notebook, 30 min; discussed final design with Darcee, 1.5 hours.

Total Time: 13 hours

Darcee:

Team meeting, 2 hours; evaluated more current patents with Jackie, 2 hours; discussed final design with Jackie, 1.5 hours; worked on design notebook, 30 min; started some circuit diagrams and sketches, 1 hour.

Total Time: 7 hours
