Project Overview

Project Title: Variable Stiffness Guide Wire for Catheters

Client: Dr. Victor Haughton

Problem Statement: To design a guide wire of variable stiffness to be used in a catheterization procedure and in situations where the conventional guide wires fail. The wire must be of correct stiffness in order to reach the correct point in the vessel, but also provide enough force for the catheter to follow into the vessel. The client is specifically interested in the precise deposit of contrast into a cerebral blood vessel for CT procedures.

Project Status

Our team has finished our semester long project. Our final design incorporates a central core of wedge shaped beads surrounded by a Nitinol layer, which is then coated by a hydrophilic coating. Please read more about it in our final design paper.

Below are some CAD drawings of our design. Click on the thumbnail to see the full size drawing.
