Project Title: Variable Stiffness Guidewire for catheters
Client: Dr. Victor Houghton
Team Members:
Kristi Hinner, Erik Birkeneder, Jeremy OBrien, Hart Moss, Brian Asti, Nick
Vandehey, John Puccinelli, Tom Pearce
Date: 11/7 11/13
Problem Statement: To design a guide wire of variable stiffness to be used in a catheterization procedure and in situations where the conventional guide wires fail. The wire must be of correct stiffness in order to reach the correct point in the vessel, but also provide enough force for the catheter to follow into the vessel.
Restatement of Team Goals:
1. Detailed research on bead/ vacuum ideas
2. Set-up outline for paper/ schedule for paper completion
3. Look into some manufacturing details
Summary of Accomplishments:
1. Research on bead/vacuum ideas
2. Began search for manufacturing details
3. Began poster ideas
Statement of Team Goals:
1. More research on ideas
2. Begin PDS revision
3. Meeting to update client

New Developments:
**This section will be used to inform the
client/advisor/large group about the latest progress of the 3 subgroups.
Guidewire:
Progress has been made on a device to apply suction to the guidewire. The
device so far consists of a 10 mL syringe (although any size is compatible
with the device) connected to a 3-way stopcock. The guidewire can be
attached to the stopcock by a custom made PDMS gasket which provides the
seal necessary for the vacuum to be applied. After the pressure is
applied, the stopcock can be closed so that the syringe can be removed and
the vacuum is isolated in the guidewire-stopcock complex.
