Pneumatic Lumbar Support Cushion

Team members:

Sara Alford
Heather Shaner

Client:

Julie Sherry, MS, PT
4176 Medical Sciences Center
(608) 265-9601

Reporting period:

Oct. 4 - Oct 10

Problem statement:

To design a pneumatic lumbar support cushion that undergoes continuous passive motion for a specified duration of time while a patient is in a sitting position such as driving an automobile. The device should inflate and deflate providing proper positioning of the lumbar and pelvic region.

Restatement of team goals:

1) Start draft of background sections for the paper, gather all resources.
2) Continue working on design solutions, scan in drafts to computer.
3) Update PDS with more concrete measurements.
4) Talk to Bern about getting started on the web page development (Sara)

Accomplishments:

1) Background Research on CPM
2) Found another device VERY similar to the client's idea
3) Preliminary Designs developed better
4) Rough draft of paper started
5) Web site started (Sara)

Goals for next reporting period:

1) Finish Paper
2) PDS should be updated for paper
3) Make needed revisions
4) Power point Presentation
5) Website development (Sara)

Project schedule:

Week 1: Met with Client
Week 2: Background Research
Week 3: Initial PDS and Preliminary Design Brainstorming
Week 4: Background Research, Preliminary Designs
Week 5: Paper, Choosing A Design

Difficulties thus far:

We found another device really similar to what the client was talking about. We are not really sure how to interpret that into our paper and the designs that we were thinking of. Our paper is a little long right now, so we need to condense the material to get a good five pages instead of 6-7.

Activities

Heather - Background Research from last week (2-3 hours)
Sara - Paper and Preliminary Design work (3-4 hours), BWIG meeting to set up page (1 hour)
Together - Paper work (2 hours) plus class work with preliminary designs (2 hours)

Total time (this period):

Heather - 6.5 hours
Sara - 8.5 hours

Total time (overall):

Heather: 16 hours
Sara: 18 hours
