Thermal warm/heat probe for neurological examination

Team members:

Andrew Hoyord
Bern Jordan
Dana Mueller
Paul Thottakara
Paul Victorey

Client:

Miroslav Backonja

Reporting period:

9/7/01 - 9/12/01

Problem statement:

"Doctors are now finding it necessary to test patients experiencing pain or numbness primarily in their extremities, and possibly the trunk or face for neurological damage and warm/heat sensitivity by applying hot sensations to their skin. A device that heats up to target temperatures of 38 and 45 degrees Celsius relatively quickly, and is able to be used many times per charging of the handle is preferred. This device would be an attachment to the already existing battery operated portable and wall mounted Welch-Allyn ophthalmoscope/otoscope handle."

Restatement of team goals:

No previous goals, this is the first report of the semester.

Accomplishments:

  1. Determined who was going to work on this project this semester.
  2. Assigned roles to team members.
  3. Met as a group to discuss project goals and tasks.

Goals for next reporting period:

  1. Inventory the materials and circuitry that had been collected throughout the past semesters of work on the project.
  2. Get into the lab to begin testing the heating characteristics of the heating probe constructed last spring.
  3. Read/review the most recent final design paper and design notebooks from last spring.
  4. Determine a schedule for the coming 14 weeks.
  5. Design experiments to test the Ni-Chrome wire for heat cycling and oxidation problems.
  6. Contact client again to introduce new team members and discuss design specifications.

Project schedule:

to be determined...

Difficulties thus far:

none

Activities:

Andrew: Read old design notebooks 0.5 hours
Bern: Worked to organize the BWIG reps from all design groups 1 hour
Dana:
Paul T: Read last semester's final paper to become familiar with the project 0.5 hours
Paul V:
Group: Met during class to get organized, and met on 9/11/2001 to talk about project goals and tasks. 1.5 hours
