Adobe PDF files are the
de facto standard for electronic documents on the Internet.
PDF files have an advantage over
Word documents because the PDF
file size is usually smaller and there are no dangerous viruses. Adobe
PDF documents are not
particularly convenient to edit however, so you will want to keep the original
copy for editing and publish the
PDF document.
Unfortunately, creating Adobe
PDF documents at
CAE is not a clear,
reliable process. At times, one of the methods may not work and you will need
to try a different way. Always check the PDF file after
creating it! Below is a list of three possible methods of creating PDFs, from
easiest to most difficult:
- Using the PDFWriter macro button in Word
- This method is the easiest and may supply the best output. I prefer
this method for creating PDFs
because PDFWriter will also automatically create a list of
contents if you used the structural styles in Word
(i.e. all heading styles will be displayed in
the contents list).
- Printing a document to the PDFWriter
printer
- This is the most reliable way of creating
PDF documents at
CAE. Using the Adobe
PDFWriter printer allows you to create
PDFs from programs besides
Word. This is a good way of publishing Visio and other drawing formats to
the web.
- Using Adobe Distiller
- This method is certainly the most work so it should be the method of
last resort. In the past, this has been the only way I have been able to
create a PDF from some
documents.
