Zipping (compressing) files reduces their file size so they are quicker to
download. With some files, you may see a drastic decrease in file size; with
other files, you may get a paltry 3% compression. The amount of compression
afforded depends on the original files.
WinZip is a simple compression program that is available on the
CAE machines. In some
cases, it is ready-to-use; in other cases, it will have to be set up first.
- Click Start, CAE
Applications, Utilities, and then
WinZip. One of two things will happen:
- WinZip will be installed on the machine. Follow the screens to set up
WinZip on the computer. Afterwards, you may have to follow step 1 again to
load the program.
- WinZip will open. Continue to the next step.
- Click the New button, or click
File, New... on the
WinZip main window (shown below).

- Navigate to the directory where you want the final zip file to be saved
and type a name in the dialog box. Check the "Add dialog" checkbox
and then click OK.

- Navigate to and select the file(s) to be added to the zip archive in the
"Add" dialog box. Because you are most likely adding a single file,
the default options on the "Add" dialog box should be sufficient.
(If you are zipping several files, you may want to investigate these other
options.) Click Add.

- Wait while the file(s) is compressed...

- Close the WinZip main window to complete the process.
Remember to test your new zip archive by attempting to unzip it.
