CAE Account Policies

The policies below come directly from CAE's initial login screen for new Unix accounts.

By activating the account on this machine, you agree to the following policies, which were set up to protect all users, and give everyone access to the limited resources available.

  1. The use of another user's account, whether you have their permission or not, will result in the loss of a login rights, or the loss of access to CAE.
  2. Unauthorized access to any CAE machine is a crime. Violators will be prosecuted under criminal or student disciplinary action applicable to stealing and cheating. University disciplinary action may include suspension, expulsion, or probationary conditions on continuing as a student.
  3. Staff responsible for the operation of these computers systems reserve the right to examine files, and if appropriate, to modify or remove files or accounts.
  4. University e-mail and network news are powerful communication tools, but they are not intended to be used for personal gain.
  5. Copying of any copyrighted software from this network or using this network to copy copyrighted software will result in revocation of network privileges and possible criminal prosecution.
  6. No food or drink is allowed in any of CAE's labs.
  7. One remote login session into a workstation is permitted if it does not have dire effects on a user who is logged into the console. CAE reserves the right to suspend or terminate login sessions.
  8. The running of background jobs on any of CAE's workstations (other than designated compute servers) is not allowed. Background jobs will be killed. Continued behavior of running background jobs will result in the loss of this account.

Additional Policies for BWIG Students

  1. Hosted web pages must be accessible as specified in the University of Wisconsin Web Accessibility Policy.
Some of the most important aspects of this include:
    1. All pages must use a consistent navigation structure.
    2. All pages must include contact information. Professor Willis Tompkins is the owner of the site and the page author must also be listed.
    3. All pictures must include useful alternative text.
    4. The simplest, clearest language possible (for the context) must used for a page. For complex or confusing terms and concepts, it would be helpful to add a brief explanation or glossary.
    5. All web pages must be validated as proper HTML code of HTML version 4.01 or later.
  2. You must not change the account password unless you have first contacted Professor Willis Tompkins and the general BWIG webmaster.
  3. Pages that are inaccessible, inappropriate, or invalid may be altered or removed by the site owner or general webmaster.
  4. Pages must not be submitted to search engines (search engines may still index the pages however) until they are archived at the end of the semester. To help prevent web crawlers from indexing these temporary web sites, you may use the following code in the head section:
    <meta name="robots" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW, NOARCHIVE" />
  5. All pages must be complete at the end of the semester. At the end of the semester, the pages will be archived on the main BME archives page and any necessary subsequent changes will be difficult and will have to be done by the general webmaster. For non-continuing projects, the original accounts will be terminated.
