Project Overview

There are two related parts to this project. The team is expected to design a system which will be applicable to both aspects of the project.

A. Analyses of the geometric (cross-sectional) properties of long bones

The purpose of this project is to develop a system for computerized measurement of the cross-sectional area moment of inertia of transverse sections of long bones for otthopaedic science and bone biology research. The area moment of inertia relates to the behavior of a bone in bending loads and is important in bone biology from a biomechanics point of view and also for srudying bone modeling and bone aging.

B. System for three dimensional reconstruction of equine leg bones

A class of deformities exists in which the leg bones of a horse are not aligned properly. Several variants of this genetic disorder can be treated, but such treament taks knowledge of the actual structural abnormalities. One way to obtain such information is to use x-ray imaging to reproduce, in three-dimensions, the bony structure of the equine leg. The purpose of this project is to develop a computer system to do these reconstructions.
