BME Design Projects
The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Outreach program is to introduce students
to Biomedical Engineering, help them to learn about the many applications of Biomedical
Engineering, promote and encourage teamwork and trouble shooting to solve problems,
and engage the students in interesting and thought provoking discussions and activities
relating to Biomedical Engineering. The primary goal of this outreach is to leave
the students with an enhanced and positive conception of mathematics, science
and engineering. We want them to feel empowered and able to conquer the field
of engineering and dispel all misconceptions they had about the field.
Problem Statement:
To develop an Outreach program that showcases technology and discusses educational
and career opportunites in the vastly growing field of Biomedical Engineering.

To date our two chosen concept modules have been fully developed. One module
is focused on topics in ergonomics the other in imaging. A presenter's
manual has been created and provides presenters with an overview, helpful hints,
guidelines and helpful resources.
The first trial was performed at Marquette Elementary in early February and
with the aid of the students; teacher, Maureen McB; and advisor, Mitch Tyler;
this was a great success. This trial run served many purposes, but it specifically
helped to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the BME Outreach kit. The
kit has been further developed based on the success of the presentation and
feedback from students and teachers. In April of 2002, two other Biomedical
engineering students to presented the kit on their own with the revised manual.
From the feedback received from this groups, final revisions were made leading
to the completion of the manual in April of 2002.
