Title: Mechanical Testing System Coupled with an Environmental Chamber for Hydrogels

Names: Garbriel Martinez-Diaz - communication liason, BSAC
Darcee Nelson - BWIG
Christy Palmer - team leader
Prof. Weiyuan John Kao - client

Date: 1/21/02 - 1/29/02

Problem Statement: To establish a procedure to make tension stencils, approved by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), and to design and build an environmental chamber to be used with a mechanical testing system in order to test the mechanical properties of hydrogels.

Summary of Accomplishments: Our team visited Prof. Kao's lab to see the tension stencils and hydrogels, Prof. Crone's lab to see a mechanical testing system that is already set up for hydrogels, and Prof. Beeb's lab to see other equipment used to make tension stencils. We also have identified our project - wrote a problem statement and determined our immediate and long-term goals.

Statement of Team Goals: We plan to meet with Prof. Kao on Thursday, January 31, start a literature search on hydrogels and their properties, as well as, other environmental chambers and mechanical testing systems used in other labs. We also plan to search for patents on environmental chambers and visit another lab with a mechanical testing system that is not currently being used for hydrogels.

Project Schedule: 1/21/02 - 1/29/02: have identified project and goals, visited client's lab, visited labs with mechanical testing system for hydrogels and stencil-making equipment; will meet with client, and start literature and patent search on hydrogels and environmental chambers
