Title: Mechanical Testing System Coupled with an Environmental Chamber for Hydrogels

Names: Garbriel Martinez-Diaz - communication liason, BSAC
Darcee Nelson - BWIG
Christy Palmer - team leader
Prof. Weiyuan John Kao - client

Date: 3/19/02 - 4/1/02

Problem Statement: To establish a procedure to make tension stencils, approved by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), and to design and build an environmental chamber to be used with a mechanical testing system in order to test the mechanical properties of hydrogels.

Restatement of Team Goals: We plan to develop a preliminary design for the environmental chamber and meet with our client to go over our progress thus far and our ideas for the design of the environmental chamber.

Summary of Accomplishments: We met as a team and with our client and developed some preliminary design ideas for the environmental chamber. We also met with our advisor to receive feedback on our mid-semester paper and presentation.

Statement of Team Goals: We plan to set up a meeting with our client for early next week to discuss our final preliminary design idea to receive feedback. We will also discuss our design with our advisor. Before we finalize a design we will search the internet and go visit stores such as Wal-Mart and REI (a camping and sporting goods store) this Thursday to look at existing products in order to visualize and obtain other ideas for the components and construction of the environmental chamber. We hope to finalize our final preliminary design for the environmental chamber this Friday.

Project Schedule:
1/21 - 2/8 Meet with client, begin literature/patent/product searches, and visit other labs on campus
2/9 - 2/15 Continue research, brain storming, and develop PDS for stencil procedure
2/16 - 3/8 Establish procedure to make stencils, develop PDS and preliminary design for environmental chamber
3/8 Go to lab to make another stencil
3/9 - 3/14 Prepare mid-semester paper and presentation
3/15 Mid-semester presentation
3/16 - 3/22 Implement any changes for stencil procedure suggested by advisor and client
3/23 - 5/3 Work on environmental chamber and mechanical testing system
5/4 - 5/9 Prepare final poster presentation
5/10 Final poster presentation
5/13 - 5/17 Final meeting with advisor
