Design Project, Phase 1

Memorandum

To: Badger Engineering process exploration teams

From: T. W. Root, Development Director

Our company’s Planning Department forecasts a shortage of glycerol will soon affect our ability to produce several existing products. We have adequate unoccupied space available in our plant, and access to the necessary raw materials, so we wish to investigate possible processes for producing our own glycerol. Likely candidates include the existing route through allyl chloride and epichlorhydrin, and a new route through acrolein.

Working in the groups as defined below, prepare preliminary designs to produce 100,000 metric tons/year of glycerol for each process. Each team should develop a report that includes:

a) Process flowsheets for both of the candidate processes. Indicate all inlet and outlet flow rates and major unit operations. For this design phase, treat all reactions as going to completion with maximum selectivity to the desired products.

b) Preliminary economic evaluation of both processes, based on raw material inputs and product streams on your flowsheet.

c) A list of additional information needed to answer remaining questions, or refine the design.

d) A list of different characteristics of the design that could be optimized. In particular, what criteria do you suggest to evaluate what is the “best” design?
