The Apostle Islands
are a group of 22 islands in Lake
Superior, off the Bayfield Peninsula in northern Wisconsin. The
majority of the islands are located in Ashland County—only Sand, York,
Eagle, and Raspberry Islands are located in Bayfield County. All the
islands except for Madeline Island and Long Island are part
of the Apostle Islands National
Lakeshore. The Lakeshore has become
a
world-class destination for sea kayaking, luring paddlers with scenic
wilderness, ancient geology and a rich cultural history. Some of the
most
popular attractions are the sea caves located at several spots around
the
archipelago. Formed from years of waves and ice carving through
sandstone
cliffs, the caves are a series of delicate arches, vaulted chambers and
hidden
passageways that are most easily explored by kayak.
