These are the final ratings for the 1994 season. Unbeaten teams are rated 100 points above their best opponent. Nebraska's best opponent was Colorado; Penn State's best opponent was Michigan. And Colorado beat Michigan with a "hail Mary" pass to the end zone in the closing seconds of their game.
Up until the very last day of games, it was still just barely possible for Penn St. to overtake Nebraska:
Wisconsin had to beat Duke in the Hall of Fame Bowl (YES) Ohio State had to beat Alabama in the Citrus Bowl (NO) Notre Dame had to beat Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl (NO) Penn St. had to beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl (YES) Florida had to beat Florida St. in the Sugar Bowl (NO)
In this scenario, the best team beaten by Penn St. would have been Ohio State and the best team beaten by Nebraska would have been Miami. The win by Wisconsin was necessary to bring up Ohio State's rating; the loss by Florida St. was necessary to bring down Miami's rating.
A team's rating is the average of its opponents' ratings plus 100 for a win or minus 100 for a loss excluding wins that would lower the rating and losses that would raise the rating. Bowl games count double. These ratings are in the public domain and may be freely published.
