In their 11 game schedules, S Fla is playing 8 1A teams; Troy St is playing 6. But under NCAA Division 1 rule 20.9.6.2, to be considered 1A, a team must have 60% of its schedule against 1A teams. Troy State thereby doesn't qualify, at only 55%. This info was provided by Peter Wolfe. As the season is approaching, I'm going to leave Troy St as 1A for now. Systems have been split on where to put them. The Big West is gone: Boise State moves to the WAC, Utah State becomes an independent and the other 4 teams help to form the new Sun Belt Conference. The Sun Belt also gets 3 previous independents: SW La. (Lafayette), NE La. (Monroe), and Middle Tennessee State. The WAC also gets former independent La. Tech, but it loses TCU to Conf. USA. CHANGES FOR 2001 SEASON - 1AA: Independent Hofstra becomes the eleventh member of the Atlantic 10. W Kentucky leaves the Ohio Valley for the Gateway Conf. The Pioneer Conf. adds 4 independent teams, Austin Peay, Davidson, Jacksonville (FL), and Morehead State. With 9 teams, there will be 2 divisions and a Pioneer championship game. Cal St Northridge has left the Big Sky and is now a 1AA independent. Two other 1AA independents have joined conferences: St John's is now in the Northeast and Georgetown is in the Patriot Conf. Officially, 1AA adds Savannah St. & Morris Brown. Beginning its transition to 1AA is Gardner-Webb. I'm not rating New Haven (Div-2) in 2001, as it will play only 1 Div-1AA school. Also, Florida Atlantic begins its football program in 2001 and will play a 1AA schedule. Florida International plans to do the same thing in 2002.
