From: "Steve Wrathell" Subject: CPA Rankings 2002 Preseason NCAA football rankings page Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 23:38:10 +0000 CPA RANKINGS - NCAA FOOTBALL (TM) CPA RETRODICTION RANKINGS - NCAA FOOTBALL (TM) (c) 2002, Steven Wrathell CPA PC 2002 PRESEASON PAGE, with conference predictions, 1A & 1AA My description page is at http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~dwilson/rsfc/rate/wrathell.html Note that CPA Rankings is my original, predictive system, which uses victory margins and that CPA Retrodictive Rankings is my other system, which, in 2002, will not use victory margins for any part of the rating calculations (in NCAA), until after the bowls, at which time victory margins capped at 21 points will be used in a preliminary step. The preseason rankings and ratings are the same for both systems. The team-specific Home Field Advantage (HFA) factors do differ between the systems. See them on my current NCAA page. SCHEDULE NOTES: The 3 big Florida teams all play each other, with 1 home game and one on the road: Miami @ Fla, Fla @ FSU, FSU @ Miami. Miami & Fla are @ TN. Nebraska is at home for Tex & Col, but is @ KSU. Col is also @ Okla. The neutral TX-OK game, as usual, will be big. Va Tech has road games vs. BC, Syr, & Miami. FSU also has tough conference home games: Ga Tech & Md. Of last year's national contenders, OR may seem to have it "easy," by not facing any of CPA Ranking's 2001 top 10 teams, but they face 4 teams that were ranked in my top 20 (all in the Pac-10), Stanford & Wash (home) & @ UCLA & @ Wash St. LSU is @ Va Tech & @ Fla. The Big 10 could have a team with a great regular season record, but their champs have been beaten severely in recent bowls. Some of the teams from last year's top 10 have 1AA teams on their schedules (and not even the best 1AA teams). Even the top 1AA teams don't have a chance against a top-10 1A school. These games also hurt teams' BCS SoS factors. However, there are obviously enough games involving possible contenders facing each other to make it difficult to have many undefeated or one-loss teams. CHANGES FOR 2002 SEASON - 1A: Former independent, Central Florida, will be playing in the MAC East. To make room, Bowling Green shifts to the MAC-W. In 2003, South Florida will join the CUSA. Connecticut will join the Big East, a conference that plans to remove Temple after 2004. CHANGES FOR 2002 SEASON - 1AA: Cal St Northridge has dropped football. It was an independent. Florida International is playing in its first year of football ever, just as Florida Atlantic did last year. It is an independent. Four independents have formed the new Big South Conference. They are Charleston Southern, Elon, Gardner-Webb, and Liberty. In 2003, VMI will leave the Southern Conference to join the Big South. Coastal Carolina, for its first season of football, will also join this conference in 2003. St. John's (NY) went from the Northeast to the Metro Atlantic.
