Example: FSU beat Clemson by 48 points. I created a deviation formula: dev=FSU-Clemson-48. Ideally, that cell should be zero, but it isn't. I do this for every game played. I take the sum of the deviations squared. This sum is minimized iteratively. The initial ratings guess for all teams is 50.
