There is beauty in defense as in offense and this game ought to be mandatory study material for every coach whose team has been thrashed by an "aerial attack" team. In fact, it is probably one of the two best recent examples of "how to do it" in the defense textbook. The parallels between the 2001 Orange Bowl and the 1993 Sugar Bowl (Alabama versus Miami) are irrestistible: In each case, the winning team used a tactically agile and lightning quick defense to "read" and completely shut down the previously imperial "aeriel attack" offense of a Florida-based football team. Both 1992 Miami and 2000 Florida State's Quarterbacks had been awarded the Heisman Trophy just weeks before the national showdown and, hey, the winning teams both wore Crimson/Red jerseys! It's "Deja Vu" all over again, no? Eerie comparisons aside, this game deserves serious study. It was legendary coach Bobby Bowden's worst defeat ever - we've all read how this was Florida State's only scoring shutout (the safety aside) in twelve seasons. You can bet your bottom dollar that Bowden too is the coach who will learn the most from this and that it will never happen to him again!
