Examinations: Two hourly exams and a final exam.

Homework: Approximately 10 homework sets will be assigned during the

semester. Several of the homework problems will require use

of PSpice. The evaluation version of PSpice that can be

downloaded at no charge from MicroSim will be adequate for

solution of the pertinent homework problems.

Objectives: To introduce the student to the basic power electronic

devices and to study and analyze fundamental power

conditioning converters.

I. Piecewise linear, uncontrolled circuits (1.5 weeks)

Single/multiple diode circuit analysis

Power flow

II. Power electronic devices (2.5 weeks)

Semiconductor principles

Device terminal characteristics (diode, thyristor, BJT,

MOSFET, IGBT, MCT)

Switching losses

III. AC - DC converters (2 weeks)

Single-phase/three-phase converters

Instantaneous/average value analysis

Nonideal sources

Harmonic analysis

Snubber networks

IV. DC - DC converters (4 weeks)

Power choppers

Switch mode power supplies

V. AC - AC converters (1 week)

Single-phase voltage controllers

VI. DC - AC converters (3 weeks)

Single-phase inverters

Six-step/SPWM

MATLAB-based harmonic analysis
