Problem Statement

Workstation for a Light Assembly Line

A shelf, table, or cart device is needed to hold the raw goods for our operators while they perform our Light Assembly process to make our finished goods, which are children's toys. There are 16 stations where our operators retrieve a raw material from this shelf/table/cart and place it in the finished good that is traveling in front of them on a conveyor belt.

Depending upon the task there may also be manipulation of the finished good itself. In essence, the shelf, table, or cart must be easy to use for the operator as well as easy to resupply while the operator is working. There is a short cycle time for the operator and the conveyor is not stopped to resupply the shelf/table/cart. This project will have a scope that includes the following areas: equipment design, workstation layout, cost analysis, process flow, ergonomic (biomechanical and ease of use), material handling, and safety.

Objectives

  • Design/research possible material storage systems for use on the assembly line.

  • Provide possible solutions to improving poor ergonomic situations.

  • Improve overall productivity of the operation while making the operators' jobs more pleasant.
