Students
Four local presenters will be chosen for an expense-paid trip to the National JSEHS. The one student who, in the opinion of the judges, makes the best research presentation at the UW-Madison Symposium, will present his or her research at the National Symposium, competing against winners from across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Dependent School System in Europe and Asia for an all-expense-paid trip to the International Youth Science Fortnight in London. In addition, this student will be awarded a one-year scholarship equivalent to freshman tuition, to the UW-Madison, either as a freshman or, later, as a transfer student. The second place winner will also present his or her paper at the national symposium.
High School Teachers
The Outstanding Teacher Award, including $500 for the purchase of lab or classroom materials, will be given to the teacher of the winning student. An all-expense paid trip to the National Symposium will also be awarded to this teacher, provided that he or she has not attended a National Symposium within five years. If however, the teacher of the winning student has attended a national within that period of time, the winner of the trip will be selected by lottery from all teachers in attendance who have ever had a student in the Madison competition and who have not attended the National in five years. The teacher of the winning student will also serve as the teacher representative on the JSEHS Faculty Advisory Committee for the following school year.
