The objectives of the symposium are to:
- promote research and experimentation in the sciences, mathematics and engineering at the high school level.
- recognize the significance of research in human affairs, and the importance of humane and ethical principles in the applications of research results.
- search out talented youth and their teachers, recognize their accomplishments at symposia and encourage their continued interest and participation in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
- expand the horizons of research-oriented students by exposing them to opportunities in the academic, industrial and governmental communities.
- enlarge the number of future adults capable of conducting research and development.
The symposium stresses the active processes and applications of scientific inquiry and investigation. Participants have the opportunity to visit with researchers and scientists, to observe the use of sophisticated equipment, to see research demonstrations, and to experiment and practice with technical hardware. Seminars will explore basic research in science, mathematics and engineering; the application of scientific research to the humanities and to social, environmental or community problems; and the implications of scientific and technological work for mankind.
