High School Students are encouraged to submit

  1. Original research papers in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics. Papers will be divided into two categories: 1) research done under the direction of a university advisor or in a research institution, and 2) research done in the home, field or high school setting. Students working with a professional researcher must submit the name and address of that researcher with the original abstract. A panel of UW faculty will read all papers and select the best from each category for the scholarship competition. [Guidelines for research papers.]
  2. Workshop abstracts for reports of research in progress. Reports will be presented in a classroom setting, and are non-competitive. Students, teachers and UW-Madison faculty will critique and discuss the reports on the basis of the original hypothesis, research design and technique, and implication of the completed project. Students presenting these reports will be eligible for assistance from UW staff and faculty in order to finalize their projects for competitive presentation at the following year's Symposium. Workshop presenters must be in grades 9-11, and are limited to one workshop presentation during their high school careers. [Guidelines for abstracts.]
