bulletLesion Size Estimator Experiment

    We present a process of FEM modeling a system including blood, myocardium, and an ablation catheter with a thermistor embedded at the tip. The simulation uses a simple proportional-integral (PI) controller to control the RF ablation model in temperature-controlled mode. Lesion size is affected by set temperature and the convection heat transfer coefficients in different locations. We determine the lesion size for set temperature, the different convection heat transfer coefficients in different locations at 5 s, 10 s, 20 s, 30 s, 40 s, 50 s, 60 s, 70 s, 80 s, and 90 s after the start of ablation. We simulate ablation for these parameters for high-flow locations such as the atrioventricular (AV) node and atrial aspect of (AV)  annulus accessory pathways, and low flow beneath the valve inside the coronary sinus. We present results showing the change of lesion depth and lesion width with time, under the different conditions. We collect data for all conditions and use it to create a database. We implemented a user-interface where the user enters set temperature, ablation time and location. Based on the database, the software estimates lesion dimensions. This software could be implemented in clinical ablation machines and may be helpful for the electrophysiologist to choose treatment parameters.
